Big, busy and smack dab in Dresden's historic centre, the Hilton takes up an entire city block and is like a small village unto itself. Although catering primarily for the suit brigade, there's also plenty in store for those in town for the sights.

Most of the 333 handsome (if a touch generic) rooms have views of one famous landmark or another, including the sparkling Frauenkirche. You can even spy its signature dome while lounging in the outdoor jacuzzi, which is part of a truly fabulous spa and fitness club with a vast array of state-of-the-art workout equipment. Although also open to non-guests, it's rarely crowded and is a great place to work off your guilty conscience in case you've overindulged at one of the hotel's dozen or so bars and restaurants. These include a vaulted wine cellar, a gourmet Italian ristorante and a sushi bar. Unfortunately, prices here don't always match the quality of the food, let alone the service, but there are plenty of other options within easy walking distance. Kids stay free in their parents' room.
