Burg Rheinfels
The busy riverside promenade of St Goar is lorded over by the sprawling ruins of Burg Rheinfels, once the mightiest fortress on the Rhine and a must-see. Built in 1245 by a local count as a base for his toll-collecting operation, its size and labyrinthine layout is astonishing. Not just children love exploring the subterranean tunnels and mine galleries.

Ehrenbreitstein
On the right bank, looming above the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers, this mighty fortress proved indestructible to all but Napoleonic troops in 1801. A few years later, the Prussians took this as a challenge to build one of Europe's strongest fortifications. Behind the mighty bulwarks is a hostel, two restaurants and the Landesmuseum.

Schloss Stolzenfels
With its crenellated turrets, ornate gables and fortifications, Schloss Stolzenfels exudes the sentimental beauty for which the Romantic Rhine is famed. A Prussian king rebuilt the castle, ruined by the French, as his summer residence in 1823. Today, the rooms largely remain as the king left them. The guided tours are in German.
