Grab a seat in this down-to-earth micro-brewery's warren of vaulted chambers, order a mug of Schwarz (dark) or Hell (light) - or a 3/5L Bierturm (beer tower; around €16 .90/25.90) - and settle in for people-watching. The Monday-to-Friday, all-you-can-eat lunch buffet (around €5 .10), the Sunday buffet dinner (around €9 .50) and the Saturday and Sunday breakfast buffet (around €4 .90) are good value. Call two or three days ahead to arrange a free, 20-minute tour of the beer-making facilities.

I was quite excited when my girlfriend and I (both Americans living and working in Germany for the year) came across this restaurant in Mainz - a city known for it's wine and Weinstuben. We both like beer and so the promise of good microbrew plus a schnitzel was too good to pass up. While the atmosphere is great - sitting under vaulted ceilings, the warren of tables that go past the brewing equipment, and the friendly (if not just a bit too Bavarian) decor make it a nice place. The food is also pretty good - it's not gourmet, and your schnitzel (or other meat dish of choice) will probably come covered in grease, but you can wash it down with their excellent beer - the dark beer is better than their Helles. You'll pay between 8 and 12 Euros for a main dish, 3 Euros for a half liter of beer, and just like a biergarten, 6.90 for a full liter. Service is typical for Germany, in that it's just there. Nothing special, but also nothing to complain about. The one complaint that I have is that the restaurant tries to pass itself off as being much older than it is - it was founded in 1989! Reminds me a lot of microbrews in Michigan/Midwest. Overall, I'd call it a good option if you're living in on near Mainz, but if you're just passing through I'd stick with a Weinstube, as they are more authentic for the region, slightly cheaper (about 1-2 Euros a person) and are usually in great, out of the way locations.
