Japanese restaurants in Germany

  1. Ishin

This cafeteria-style sushi parlour scores two for looks and 10 for freshness and value. The combination platters are ample and, if you’re lucky, the sushi-meisters will even sneak in an extra piece or two. Prices drop even lower during happy hour (all day Wednesday and Saturday and 11am to 4pm on other days). Nice touch: the unlimited free green tea. There are three other branches in town.

    Uma

Japanese for horse, Uma is the ‘casual’ sister of Michelin-starred Tim Raue’s stunning MA restaurant complex. Flavours are woven together like fine tapestries in such dishes as pork cheeks with papaya and sorrel or ‘pizza’ with yellow-fin tuna. Alas, you’ll need three or four plates (each costing between €10 and €30) to fill your tummy.

    Musashi

Sushi purists rejoice: you won’t find any truffle-oil-infused wasabi nonsense at this tiny parlour with a massive following. From dark red tuna to marbled salmon, it’s all fresh, expertly cut by Nippon natives and affordably priced to boot. Come at off-hours to snag a table, or get it to go and source a picnic spot by the canal.

    Sushi & Soul

This stylishly pricey joint wows with soft lighting, a long, central table that points dramatically towards the backlit open kitchen and fabulous sushi. During the long-standing and popular happy hour (6pm to 8pm) a multicourse Bento palette of sushi, not to mention all the cocktails, is half-price.

    Japanisches Teehaus

Another hint of Asia awaits at the Japanisches Teehaus, right by an idyllic duck pond. The best time to come is for an authentic tea ceremony celebrated by a Japanese tea master.
