    Das Weisse Haus

A converted fisherman's cottage, the 'White House' is (unlike its US namesake) surprisingly cramped, given its status as a major culinary player. Diners book a month ahead to submit themselves to 'surprise' dinners (vegetarian and other dietary requirements can be accommodated to a limited degree). Lunch is a simpler, à la carte affair, but reservations are still advised. The best seats among the artfully low-key rooms are in the front winter garden.

  2. B

    Pasternak

Russian writer Boris Pasternak (of Doctor Zhivago fame) would likely approve of this antique-filled and chandeliered restaurant. The menu looks like an old family photo album with black-and-white pictures on the left and Russian favourites – borscht to blini to beef stroganoff – on the right. If only the tables weren’t squished together so tightly. Free wi-fi until 6pm.

    Primaria

Delicious, uncomplicated Bulgarian fare that lifts the soul but expands your waistline is the ammo of this convivial nosh spot, where the bartender is known to pick up the guitar and Maria herself may knock back a rakia with her guests. Great salads, casseroles, baguettes and galettes, most of them meatless and made with creamy Bulgarian feta. Free wi-fi.

  4. D

    Amberg 13

This relaxed, unassuming restaurant is locally renowned for its ambitious and creative cuisine, with dishes such as Kalbshaxe (knuckle of veal) accompanied by polenta and capsicum, onion, rosemary and sherry ragout, or rabbit with chanterelle mushrooms, garlic gnocchi and green beans. It's accessed via an archway and courtyard.

    Salomon's

This designer restaurant in a former law courts building is smart enough to impress a business partner or date, but there are a few bench seats where you won't feel alone dining on the Eurasian cuisine. A bar, courtyard and club are found in the same complex.
