Getting around

Boat

Reederei Ostsee-Tour (038392-3150; www.reederei-ostsee-tour.de) will carry you around the coast from Göhren to Sassnitz, via Binz between April and October. There are five services a day; sample fares include Göhren–Binz for €4.50, and Göhren–Sassnitz for €8. An extra three ferries travel solely between Sassnitz and Binz (€6). Some services are operated by boats sailing around the chalk cliffs of the Jasmund National Park.

Bus & tram

Bus

RPNV Buses (03838-194 49; www.rpnv.de, in German) link to practically all communities. In summer, there are half-hourly services from Binz to Göhren and Sassnitz, but service to other towns is more sporadic.

Fares are according to distance. Sassnitz–Königsstuhl costs €1.55, for example, Binz–Königsstuhl €4.10, Binz–Göhren €3.60 and Göhren–Bergen €4.60. A day card for the whole network is often a good deal at €9. Local tourist offices usually have timetables and maps.

Car & motorcycle

If you don’t have much time, a car is the best mode of transport on Rügen Island, although environmental concerns are strong here and driving will be frowned upon in some quarters. The main artery is the B96. Parking meters abound, so carry plenty of change.

Train

The Rasender Roland (038301-801 12; www.rasender-roland.de) steam train shuttles between Putbus and Göhren from 7.45am to 9.30pm daily, stopping in Binz, Jagdschloss Granitz, Sellin and Baabe. Several services a day also go beyond Putbus to Lauterbach Mole. The route is divided into five zones, each costing €1.60 (Putbus–Binz is two zones; Putbus–Göhren or Göhren–Lauterbach Mole five zones). Bikes cost €2.10.

Bicycle

Sharing roads with cars cannot always be avoided. Ask at tourist offices for the Fahrrad & Nahverkehrskarte: besides being a map, it includes route recommendations and a list of hire and repair shops.
