Despite the dreadful name, this artistically decorated place is a hit for its mainstream chart-toppers and hip-hop, dance and house.

B
China Lounge
Stylish without being snootily exclusive, this leading mainstream venue boasts four areas playing electro, house, hip hop and R&B. A huge laughing Buddha looks down on the main floor.

Amphore
Beguiling in its understated beauty, Amphore has terrace views out to the Elbe and pavement tables for neighbourhood gawking. Inside it's woodsy in a non-fussy way. An excellent St Pauli spot for a drink.

Auswanderermuseum BallinStadt
Sort of a bookend for New York's Ellis Island, Hamburg's emigrant museum looks at the conditions that drove millions to leave Germany for the US in search of better lives from 1850 until the 1930s. The hardships endured are just some of the displays at this excellent museum. It is about 3km southeast of HafenCity on the island of Veddel and is served by the S-Bahn stop Veddel on the S3 line.

Bar M & V
The drinks menu is like a designer catalogue at this grand old St Georg bar that's had a beautiful restoration. Settle into one of the wooden booths, smell the freesias and enjoy.

Cafe Sul
A perfect place of refuge from the fried-fish-clutching mobs of the port area, this cafe lives up to its name with a cheery disposition even on a cloudy day. The front opens to the street and there is a good breakfast and snack menu. Tied one on last night? The tortilla (omelette with potatoes) is balm for the soul.

Deichstrasse
Hamburg’s Great Fire of 1842 broke out in Deichstrasse, which features a few restored 18th-century homes, most now housing restaurants. You can get a feel for the old canal and merchants quarter here.

Edelcurry
The humble Currywurst – one of Germany's favourite fast foods – gets the royal treatment here. Choose from three flavours of sausage (classic, fruity or spicy) and add on a side of fresh-cut fries that are the best you'll find this side of Belgium.

Familien-Eck
It's just a corner hole-in-the-wall, but this Altona classic is everything a good Hamburg neighbourhood joint should be: friendly, unassuming yet always ready to take the piss. Locals pop in, down a quick drink, joke, gossip and hurry on out.

Hamburg City Tour
A bus tour is a stress-free way to piece together this sprawling jigsaw of a city. As with boats, there are numerous tours; among them are the yellow-and-blue buses of Hamburg City Tour. Its open-topped double-decker buses pass all the leading sights over 1½ hours; tickets (sold on the bus) allow you to jump on and jump off all day. You can board at stops including the Hauptbahnhof (Kirchenallee exit), Landungsbrücken and the Rathaus.

Le Lion
Easily the classiest, most exclusive bar (by virtue of size) you'll find in Hamburg – if you find it. Look for the buzzer in a lion's head and if there's space, they'll let you into this little lair of serious cocktails. Better yet, book a table in advance.

Le Plat du Jour
Tidy and petite, this French bistro is in sharp contrast to its bland office-building surrounds. An oasis of flavour in the Altstadt, look for classics like fish soup, chicken in tarragon and various seafood and pasta dishes. The tables on the small square out front are the place to be.

Lusitano
As unadorned as a piece of salt cod, this simple little restaurant in Hamburg's old Portuguese neighbourhood captures the bright flavours of the western Mediterranean. Dishes like spicy sausages and pasta will warm your heart, but the seafood is the real star. Order the Gambas James Brown and be prepared for feel-good garlicky prawns as volatile as the namesake singer. It's a small place, so book.
