German restaurants in Hamburg

  1. A

    Alt Hamburger Aalspeicher

Despite its tourist-friendly location, the knick-knack–filled dining room and warm service at this restaurant in a 400-year-old canalside building make you feel like you’re dining in your Oma’s (grandma’s) house. Smoked eel from its own smokehouse is a speciality.

  2. B

    Erikas Eck

Wood-lined Erikas has been serving up traditional home cooking since the golden oldies on its radio were first-time hits. Most of its legendary fare, including schnitzels, herrings and Schweinebraten (roast pork), costs under €10 and is served 21 hours a day.

  3. C

    Deichgraf

In a prime setting, with the water on one side and long street-side tables on the other, Deichgraf excels in Hamburg specialities cooked to a high standard. The menu changes seasonally and much of the food is sourced from the region.

  4. D

    Oberhafenkantine

Since 1925, this slightly tilted brick restaurant has served up the most traditional Hamburg fare using only the best ingredients. Here you can order a 'Hamburger' and you get the real thing: a patty made with various seasonings and onions. Roast beef, pollock, haddock and more round out a wonderful trip back to the days when the surrounding piers echoed to the shouts of seafarers and the crash of cargo-laden nets.

  5. E

    Edelcurry

The humble Currywurst – one of Germany's favourite fast foods – gets the royal treatment here. Choose from three flavours of sausage (classic, fruity or spicy) and add on a side of fresh-cut fries that are the best you'll find this side of Belgium.
