Berger Strasse is the spinal cord of the district of Bornheim, the traditional working class part of town. These days, it prefers the label 'bohemian', an image it measures up to well with its mix of dusty bookstores, eccentric boutiques, health food shops and inexpensive cafes and restaurants. Towards the north, the feel gets more mainstream with chain stores and snack bars.

I live here in Bornheim, and it so ever so much more than the somewhat lame description I have found on here. Twice a week, we have a wonderful open market. On these Wednesdays and Saturdays, the Berger Strasse is packed with people, the sights of the colorful produce and flowers, the smell of herbs and grilled bratwurst, the aroma of smoked meat and fresh breads, and the sound of the vendors calling out their specials, all make you want to immerse yourself so you can take it all in. Even if I don't need to buy anything, I love to walk through this market. It is one of the best markets in Frankfurt and one of the largest. Way down at the end of the Berger Strasse, there is Bethman Park, which contains the loveliest Chinese Garden, complete with waterfall, fish pond, pagodas and temple. This is one of the best kept secrets of Frankfurt! It is such an oasis of beauty positioned right in the middle of busy Frankfurt. The surrounding park is also lovely, with well kept gardens of flowers that change with the seasons. As to dusty book stores. That might have been the case 10 or 12 years ago, but the Berger Strasse has become a vibrant, trendy place to be, with new stores opening all the time. The great pedestrian area up near the clock tower is always packed with tables and people having coffee or lunch or drinks in the evening. The neighborhood is a wonderful mix of cultures and countries, young and old, families and singles, professionals and blue collar workers. The Berger Strasse fest held every year in August is one of the more popular events in Frankfurt. It is a great street festival that is just plain fun, with lots of yummy food and of course lots of music.
