When it comes to accommodation prices, supply and demand reign supreme in Frankfurt. The city’s hotels cater mainly to business travellers and so tend to drop rates on weekends (Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights), on holidays and in July and August. But during major trade fairs, prices can triple or even quadruple, with modest doubles going for €300 or more. The easiest way to find out if your trip coincides with one of the larger fairs is go to almost any hotel website and plug in specific dates. Sky-high prices mean that you’ve got a big Messe on your hands.
To avoid paying a fortune for accommodation during trade fairs, many travellers stay outside the city and commute using Frankfurt’s fast, easy-to-use public transport system. In neighbouring cities such as Darmstadt, Wiesbaden and Mainz, which are an hour or less by S-Bahn from the fairgrounds, prices rise by only a few tens of per cent during even the largest fairs, and each has a lot more to offer visitors than the suburbs out by the airport.
Major hotel chains with outposts in Frankfurt include Hilton, Holiday Inn, Ibis, Intercontinental, Le Méridien, Mercure, Mövenpick (on the Messe grounds), Ramada and Sheraton.
The tourist office has a free hotel booking service but arranges private rooms only during trade fairs. At the airport, help with hotel reservations (including during trade fairs) is available from Hotels & Tours.
You can find furnished rooms and apartments through a Mitwohnzentrale (accommodation finding service), such as www.city-residence.de and www.mitwohnzentrale-mainhattan.de (in German; free registration required).
