Theater Bremen
Bremen's main theatre company is Theater Bremen, which performs across three venues. The main theatre, which stages opera, operettas and musicals, is Theater am Goetheplatz, where the famous 1970s film director, Rainer Werner Fassbinder honed his craft with the company. In the attached Neues Schauspielhaus you'll find new interpretations of classics and avant-garde drama, while the Brauhauskeller, the smallest venue, is used for anything from Elvis musicals to Edward Albee.

Haus der Kulturen der Welt
The eccentric building with a gravity- defying parabolic roof west of the chancellery is the Haus der Kulturen der Welt. Originally a congress hall, it's now a cultural space with dance performances, readings, films, exhibits and theatre from Latin America, Asia and Africa. Chime concerts ring out at noon and 6pm daily from the nearby 68-bell carillon.

Scharfrichter Kino
This lively cultural centre stages theatre and cabaret, including autumn's Passauer Kabarett-Tage (Passau Cabaret Days), a decades-old tradition of political satire that was sued and shut down by the establishment before the counterculture spurred its revival. It's best appreciated by German speakers with a knowledge of local political nuances and dialect.

Parties, concerts, readings, theatre, discussions - the menu sure varies at this well established cultural centre in a former factory. The beer garden is a convivial place to spend a balmy summer night. It's a couple of kilometres east of the Hauptbahnhof; take tram 706 to Fichtenstrasse or the U-Bahn 75 to Kettwiger Strasse.

As home to the city's Philharmonic Orchestra, Munich's premier high-brow cultural venue has a packed schedule. The Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks (Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra) is also based here, and performs on Sundays throughout the year.
