    The imposing domed Tonhalle, in a converted 1920s planetarium, is the home base of the Düsseldorfer Symphoniker (Düsseldorf Symphony Orchestra).

  3. Berliner Symphoniker

    Founded in 1966, the Berliner Symphoniker has no permanent home and performs mainly in the Berliner Philharmonie and the Konzerthaus. Israeli conductor Lior Shambadal has been the man in charge since 1997. After going bankrupt in 2004 due to state budget cuts, the orchestra is now in private hands.

    Munich's premier orchestra regularly performs at the Gasteig Cultural Centre. Book tickets early as performances usually sell out.

    Berliner Philharmonie

    This world-famous concert hall has supreme acoustics and, thanks to Hans Scharoun’s clever terraced vineyard design, not a bad seat in the house. It’s the home base of the Berliner Philharmoniker, currently led by Sir Simon Rattle. Concerts are also at the adjacent Kammermusiksaal.

    The DSO, lead by German Ingo Metzmacher, started life in 1946 and was financed by the USA until 1953. Like the Symphoniker, it has no permanent venue, performing regularly at the Berliner Philharmonie and other major stages.

    Thomanerchor

    This famous boys’ choir performs Bach motets and cantatas at 6pm on Friday and 3pm on Saturday and also sings during Sunday services at 9.30am and 6pm at the Thomaskirche. Special concerts take place throughout the year. Performances are usually filled to capacity, so try to be there when doors open 45 minutes before concerts begin.

    Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler

    The gifted students at Berlin’s top-rated music academy populate several orchestras, a choir and a big band, which collectively stage as many as 400 performances annually, most of them in the Neuer Marstall on Schlossplatz, where the Prussian royals once kept their coaches and horses. Many concerts are free or low-cost.

    Gewandhausorchester

    Led by Ricardo Chailly since 2005, the Gewandhaus is one of Europe’s finest and oldest civic orchestras. With a tradition harkening back to 1743, it became an orchestra of European renown a century later under music director Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. Aside from giving concerts in the Neues Gewandhaus, it also performs with the Thomaner Boys' Choir in the Thomaskirche and with the Oper Leipzig. Tickets are available by email, by phone and in person.
