    Galerie Michael Schultz

This well-established gallery represents such contemporary German hot shots as AR Penck and Georg Baselitz. It also works with internationally well-known Berlin-based figurative painters of the next generation, including Cornelia Schleime, SEO and Römer + Römer, a Russian-German artist couple that we’ve interviewed. Hautnah Those who like to worship at the altar of hedonism should check out this three-floor emporium of erotica. Fetishistas can stock up on latex bustiers, rubber bodysuits, sex toys, themed get-ups and vertiginous footwear, along with an interesting wine selection (Marquis de Sade champagne anyone?).

    Galerie Brockstedt

This well-respected commercial gallery has built a name for itself with art by modern masters, especially those working between the two world wars, including Otto Dix, George Grosz and Franz Radziwil. A secondary focus belongs to post-WWII realists, including Isabel Quintanilla and Francesco Lopez, and abstract German artists such as Willi Baumeister and Ernst Wilhelm Nay.

    Galerie Goff + Rosenthal

This NYC transplant represents a sure sign that Berlin has arrived on the international art circuit. Regular shows concentrate on works by emerging artists and the space retains an admirable blend of the serious and the light-hearted, with a more relaxed atmosphere than that found at some of Mitte’s other galleries.

    Neugerriemschneider

Expect to see some of the city’s most intriguing exhibitions here, where past displays have featured the work of Berlin’s current star Olafur Eliasson (the Danish-Icelandic artist responsible for 2008’s Waterfall installation in NYC). Plenty of food for thought here, that’s for sure.

    Jüdische Galerie Berlin

This gallery, next to the Neue Synagogue, offers an excellent introduction to art produced by 20th-century Jewish artists. Although most are now Berlin-based, many actually hail from other parts of Germany, Eastern Europe and Israel.
