Food shopping in Berlin

  1. A

    Fassbender & Rausch

If the Aztecs thought of chocolate as the elixir of the gods, then this depot of truffles and pralines must be heaven. Bonus: the chocolate volcano and the giant replicas of Berlin landmarks.

    Marheineke Markthalle

This old local market has been overhauled in recent times and now concentrates on provedores selling regional and organic produce. Despite its somewhat sterile new look, sweet touches abound (such as being asked if you want your apples polished). There’s also a decent selection of food stalls for snacking, and spotless loos in the basement.

    Leysieffer

Leysieffer has been concocting irresistible chocolates since 1909, and its champagne truffles, nougat, dark chocolates and other temptations are all well displayed at this busy flagship store. Small tins (€10) embellished with the Brandenburger Tor (Brandenburg Gate) make nice, easily transportable gifts for the folks back home.

    Goldhahn & Sampson

Pink Himalayan salt, Moroccan argan oil and crusty German breads are among the temptingly displayed delicacies at this posh food shop. Sasha and Andreas hand-pick all items, most of them rare, organic and from small suppliers. For inspiration, nose around the cookbook library or book a class at the on-site cooking school.

    Bonbonmacherei

The old-fashioned art of handmade sweets has been lovingly revived in this basement-store-cum-show-kitchen. Watch candy masters Katja and Hjalmar using their antique equipment to churn out such tasty treats as the signature leaf-shaped Maiblätter (May leaves).
