    Good Time

It’s good vibes all around at this gorgeous spot with a romantic garden courtyard and a Thai and Indonesian menu deeply inflected by the flavours of ginger, peanut and chilli. Satays, curries or an entire rijstafel spread (an elaborate buffet-style meal of Indonesian dishes served with steamed rice) – everything tastes genuine and fresh. Leave room for the honey-fried banana with vanilla ice cream.

    Chai Yo

No prefab curry pastes at this Thai parlour run by a sympathetic German-Thai couple. It’s not dirt cheap but everything’s made from scratch using authentic recipes that have stood the test of time. Even simple curries become culinary poetry here, but it’s dishes such as the whole fried fish that turn first-timers into regulars. Don’t be deterred by the ho-hum décor.

    Mao Thai

If you love Thai food, your tastebuds will do handsprings at this sophisticated Siam outpost. It’s a bit more expensive than the average Asian joint, but everything’s prepared freshly, service is friendly and the décor unique. The crispy duck is its signature dish and the garnishes – radish swans, carrot roses – edible works of art.

    Papaya

It’s a bit bright and the decor is less than inspired, but at least there will be few distractions from the prettily presented tom ka soups, pad Thai noodles and Thai basil chicken streaming from the open kitchen. The spiciness is pitched to German palates, so tell your server if you want the cooks to turn up the heat.

    Moon Thai

This is one of the favourite Thai nosh spot in the western city. Sunset-coloured walls accented with exotic art create an upbeat ambience that's a perfect foil for dishes so perky they might get you out of the doldrums. Anything revolving around duck or squid gets top marks.

    Edd's

Edd's grandma used to cook for Thai royals and the man himself has regaled Berlin foodies for over three decades with such palate-pleasers as twice-roasted duck, chicken steamed in banana leaves and curries that are poetry on a plate. Reservations essential.
