Zoe
With its all-white décor and stylish crowd, this place looks precious but the food is rock solid. The kitchen is helmed by duelling chefs, one in charge of Mediterranean, the other of Asian dishes. If you like the food, join one of their cooking classes. They also have bargain lunches (from around €6 ) and free wi-fi.

Zur Letzen Instanz
This folksy warren has been an enduring hit since 1621 and fed everyone from Napoleon and Beethoven to Jacques Chirac. Despite the obvious tourist factor, it's not a bad place for gourmet 'granny' fare, including Eisbein (pork knuckle) and Bouletten (meat patties) served amid a flea market's worth of knickknacks.

Zwölf Apostel
A pleasant pit stop between museums, this place beneath the railway arches has over-the-top religious décor and tasty thin-crust pizzas named after the 12 apostles. All cost a mere around €7.50 from to Monday to Friday.
