Lonely Planet review

This 60-room hotel earns its 'arte' moniker with the works of Austrian artist Günter Edlinger, whose abstract oils and pastoral florals add splashes of colour to the rooms and hallways. Alas, a lot less creativity has gone into the room furnishings, which are pleasant but in no danger of winning any design awards.

Sizes vary but all rooms sport the same red carpet, flowery curtains and high ceilings typical of Berlin town houses built around the turn of the 20th century. This particular building dates from 1899 and still preserves its imposing barrel-vaulted entranceway painted with kitschy bucolic scenes, as well as a clattering birdcage lift. Most rooms face away from the street onto a courtyard, which makes them so quiet you'll likely forget that you're in the middle of the city, only steps away from the frenzy of the Kurfürstendamm. This proximity to one of the city's premier shopping strips is handy if you feel like dropping off some bags in the middle of an extended spending spree. Once you've maxed out your credit cards, have a cold one in the snug, old-fashioned bar before sniffing around the neighbourhood for your favourite restaurant.
