Rothenburg ob der Tauber was one of the towns that was very high on the list of places I wanted to visit while I was still in Germany. Rothenburg is one of those towns in the middle of the Bavarian tourist trap known as the Romantic Road. It is one of the best preserved towns in Europe because it was never bombed during World War 2.

A quick note about Munich
Blog: See Simi Travel Blog - 27 September 2010
Munich, capital of Bavaria, brought my first experience at a Beer Hall or Hofbrauhaus. It was also the first time that I had ever seen a liter of beer, and so of course I had to order one. I looked ridiculous drinking it in small sips and holding it with two hands. By the time I had finished the one liter stein, the beer was both warm and flat. My stomach was so bloated I thought I would just explore right there and then. I nibbled on a Schweinshaxe (German pork knuckle dish) to help ease the inebriation, and the grease actually helped battle the bloat. Needless to say, it was a great time.

The Hotel Zur Post in Altötting is a large and comfortable 4 star Gasthof hotel that is perfectly located on the main town square of Altötting, right opposite the shrine of the Chapel of Mercy for which the town is famous. With 60 rooms, I imagine that this must be one of the largest hotels [...]

Neuschwanstein- The Real Cinderella Castle in Bavaria Germany
Blog: MuseumChick - 28 June 2010
After hiking the trail up the Bavarian Alps foothills from the small town of Hohenschwangau (nearby to Füssen) I discovered a real Cinderella Castle- the magical, Neuschwanstein Castle. Bavarian King Ludwig II dreamed up this castle in 1868. King Ludwig was a long-time admirer of the 19th century German composer, Richard Wagner (pronounced Vagner) and much of the castle was inspired by his operas including my personal favorite, Tristan and Isolde. Walking around the castle without a tour guide is prohibited.

Hiking the Trail to Neuschwanstein Castle in Bavaria Germany
Blog: MuseumChick - 24 June 2010
One of the most beautiful places in the world, that I have ever been, was an easy day trip from Munich, Germany. Through the Bavarian Alps, the Castle Neuschwanstein towers on a mountain above the quintessential Alps towns of Hohenschwangau and nearby Füssen. It was an easy journey from Munich. I took the 2 hour train from Munich's Main Station (München Hauptbahnhof) to Füssen, then a quick bus ride (bus #73) to Hohenschwangau. Or if you want to try out your race car driving skills you can take the legendary Autobahn. The bus dropped me off at the base of...

Lady and the Little Bear
Blog: A Lady in London - 1 February 2010
Last year a small polar bear named Knut was born at the Berlin Zoo. Cute and cuddly, the bear stole the hearts of people all over the world when its mother rejected it and the zoo raised it by hand. Fast forward a year and Knut is no longer the adorable ball of fur that the world knew him to be. He grew up to be a regular polar bear, still cute, but not that cute.

Eating in Munich
Blog: An American in London - 24 December 2009
Last week, I literally pigged out. I was in Munich for four days and ate pork products at least three times a day. Despite articles like this one touting Munich’s cutting-edge food scene, I was quite happy to stick with eating the traditional Bavarian specialties that are offered everywhere in town, which meant a lot [...]

Nuremberg Christmas Market, Germany

I have to be in Munich for a few days this week, so I took a daytrip today to visit the Nuremberg Christmas Market, which is just an hour and 45 minutes away on a regular (non-fancy) Deutsche Bahn train. I’m not a huge fan of Christmas ornaments or freezing cold weather, but things I *can* [...]

Back in Munich

Another long (and fortunately) uneventful day of travel landed us in our favorite beer city, Munich. We used our two days in the Bavarian capitol to recover from jet lag before starting our beer adventures. We arrived at our hotel in the city center and had just enough time to take a quick shower before jumping [...]
