Itinerary

Day 1 Join Berchtesgaden/Schönau
Berchtesgaden and neighbouring Schönau on Lake Königssee has long been considered the summer playground of Bavaria’s royalty (and later many prominent Nazi’s) due to its stunning location, spa waters and ideal summer climate. The town is immersed in centuries of history and atop one of the surrounding mountains is ‘Eagle’s Nest’ or Kehlstein, a teahouse given to Adolf Hitler for his 50th birthday to entertain diplomats. Beneath the ground it is possible to visit the Salt Mines (or Salzbergwerk), via a train, funicular, a raft and down slides. On arrival, check into your hotel and the remainder of the day and evening is at leisure.
Day 2 Walk in Berchtesgaden National Park to Weißbach (5.5hrs, 18.5km)
After an introduction of the tour where you will meet with your guide and the rest of the group, you start the hike through the national park of Berchtesgaden. A beautiful trail leads you up to the former miners hut, then along an easy walking trail and over an alpine pasture down to the Saalach valley, passing the impressive Seisenberg gorge en route. There are small ascents before you descend to the village of Weißbach. Ascent +550m, descent -500m
Day 3 Walk to village of Dienten – choice of 2 routes (5-6.5hrs, 10-18km)
This morning you will transfer to the edge of the Grass Mountain where the walk begins by ascending alpine pastures. There are some spectacular views of the alps, glaciers and if you are lucky, Lake Zellersee. Passing mountain huts you descend to the village of Dienten. A choice of two different routes is offered – one being moderate and the other advanced.
Day 4 To mountain hotel Mühlbach (5.5hrs, 18.5km)
Today takes you along one of the most beautiful alpine pastures, walking along the steep walls of Hochkönig. The hike begins by taking a small field trail along a mountain stream. Afterwards up and down through forest and finally up to the first alpine hut. Here you are on the edge of the Mount King Massif and in front of you are the so called Grass mountains. The trail goes up and down along the edge of the stone wall. Very impressive views from the mountain huts along the way. This evening you stay at the Mühlbach mountain hotel at the foot of the dramatic walls of the Mandelwände. Ascent +640m, descent -210m
Day 5 Rest Day
There are a number of hiking trails which you can take today or alternatively, you may choose to take the public bus to the town in the valley. With the local guest card you will receive at the hotel you will be entitled to use the bus for free. Overnight Mühlbach hotel.
Day 6 Walk to Salzach Valley, visit "Hohenwerfen", then train to Golling (4.5hrs, 12.5km)
In the morning you walk up to Mitterfeld mountain hut, with a splendid view to the summit of Hochkönig. Gently down along the old miners path to the Salzach valley, where you will see the fantastic fortress of “Hohenwerfen”. You have the option to walk up the castle hill and see the bird-of-prey flight demonstrations, the collection of weapons, and other great sights found in the castle. Afterwards by train to Golling. Located just 25kms from Salzburg, Golling has a picturesque location amongst the mountains and forests, with scenery right out of ‘The Sound of Music’. There is ample opportunity to explore or relax before dinner. Ascent +120m, descent -950m
Day 7 Ascend Jenner Peak through the Bluntautal Valley, descend by cablecar (6-7hrs, 15km)
An early start today as you ascend Jenner Peak for a panoramic view of the whole walking route including the Stony Sea Mountain Range (so called because there are only rocks on the plateau, no trees), the stunning Lake Königssee and the legendary Mount Watzmann. The trail takes you through the Bluntautal Valley which used to be a hunting ground for the bishops of Salzburg, to the “wall”. Relatively long ascent to alpine pastures and to the border of Austria and Germany. Again beautiful scenery and a very comfortable ride down into the valley by cable car (last ride is 4pm). When you look right, who will see the “Eagles Nest”. You return to your starting hotel on or near Lake Königssee. Ascent +1320m, descent -90m
Day 8 Trip Concludes
The trip concludes after breakfast.
