A truly magnificent Baroque palace, the sprawling Residenz took a generation to build and boasts the world's largest ceiling fresco painting; the Hof garten at the back is also beautiful. The interior of the Dom St Kilian and the adjacent Neumünster, an 11th-century church in the old town - continue the baroque themes of the Residenz.
