Tucherbräu
Traditional Bavarian cooking is big in Nuremberg. It's a bit on the pricey side, but the best reason to head into this rambling traditional restaurant - aside from its excellent Bavarian and handful of international dishes - is the countrified beer garden hidden out the back, which feels far from the hubbub of the city. Service is attentive and it's handily situated near the Hauptbahnhof.

Marientorzwinger
[ourpick] Marientorzwinger This is the last remaining Zwinger eatery (taverns built between the inner and outer walls when they relinquished their military use) in Nuremberg. Chomp on sturdy Franconian staples or a vegie dish in the simple wood-panelled dining room or the leafy beer garden, and swab the decks with a yard of Fürth-brewed Tucher.

Heilig-Geist-Spital
Lots of dark carved wood, a herd of hunting trophies and a romantic candlelit half-light make this former hospital one of the most atmospheric dining rooms in town. Sample the delicious, seasonally changing menu inside or out in the pretty courtyard, where the tinkle of cutlery on plate competes with a dribbling fountain.

Prison St Michel
This is one of Nuremberg's elegant gourmet restaurants, with the evening's fresh cuts displayed in the window. It's noted for its excellent sole and dorade, as well as choice cuts of prime beef; try the chateaubriand and lamb fillets. It's great for an intimate, romantic night out in a quiet street near the castle.

It's worth heading out of the centre for what is easily the best pizza in town. Help yourself to the large bottles of wine on the tables and pay for what you drink. There's an enclosed latticed terrace in warm weather. Take Tram 9 from the Hauptbahnhof to the Wurzelbaurerstrasse stop.
