Alte Brücke information
The 200m-long ‘Old Bridge’, built in 1788, connects the Altstadt with the river’s right bank and the Schlangenweg (Snake Path), whose switchbacks head up the hill to the Philosophenweg (Philosophers' Way). In March 1945, as American troops approached Heidelberg, retreating German troops blew up the bridge. The crests of historic floods are marked on the bridge supports.
On the Altstadt side of the bridge stands a brass sculpture of a monkey (1979) holding a mirror and accompanied by some mice: touch the mirror for wealth, the outstretched fingers to ensure you return to Heidelberg, and the mice for many children.
