What’s French for ‘screw this’?
panda123 recommends this,
We had both been thoroughly enjoying our day in Versailles- flouncing through the hall of mirrors, rolling royally around in the palatial gardens, soaking up the sheer over-the-top-ness of it all. Versailles is known for the excessive indulgences of kings, so naturally the palace and gardens attract us - along with thousands of other tourists in shorts and bumbags - for a day of grand chateau experience.
Some hours later, dazzled and exhausted, we headed towards the cafeteria to see what royal banquet awaited us for lunch...
Ba-bow!
The Versailles cafeteria was hardly the sun-dappled royal experience we imagined. This depressing caf looked like it should have been on the campus of an underfunded community college rather than on the grounds of a grand palace. As we looked around at hundreds of people clutching plastic trays holding overpriced sandwiches and cans of coke, we could feel our dream unraveling.
We wondered what the French was for ‘screw this’*.
Heading out through the exit gates and into the nearby suburb of Versailles, wandering until we stumbled upon the Marche Notre Dame food market – the most ridiculously charming display of the bounty of rural France. Now this was more like it, as we skipped through the aisles, picking a little home made tart here, a buttery pie there. Even with our non-existent grip on the French language, we managed to get a ruddy-cheeked, meaty-handed stall holder to make us fresh baguettes blooming with tomatoes, mayonnaise and his own handmade charcuterie. This turned out to be a totally delicious magical expedition just outside the palace gates, and a real taste of regional French cuisine at a fraction of the cost of a coke and sandwich.*FYI, it’s “vissez ceci”
