  1. Chez Le Gaulois

If you're after a menu that doesn't include twelve varieties of foie gras, then head for this excellent Alpine-inspired restaurant. Huge selections of smoked meats, sausage and cheese are served up Savoyard-style on wooden platters, or you could tuck into a traditional tartiflette made with mountains of réblochon cheese.

  3. Le Présidial

There are some top-notch restaurants around Sarlat's medieval quarter, but if you're looking for the finest that the region's got to offer, then make a beeline for Le Présidial. The food, unsurprisingly, is stunning, providing a whistle-stop tour of the signature dishes of the Périgord - magret de canard (duck breast), carre d'agneau (lamb), pommes sarlaidaises (potatoes fried in goose fat) and of course the ubiquitous foie gras.

  4. Restaurant Le Bistrot

Next door to the Maison de la Boétie, this reliable little French diner makes a perfect spot to try some Périgord specialities, especially duck and goose dishes. The pastel-shaded dining room is pretty, but on warm summer evenings the outside terrace overlooking the cathedral is the only place to be.

  5. Restaurant Rossignol

At first sight this small restaurant looks a little starchy, with its crisp white tablecloths and plain wooden chairs, but in fact the atmosphere is closer to a homely ferme auberge (farm stay) than a gourmet restaurant. Local fish, meat and foie gras dominate the menu, and you'll be in for a treat if you're here during truffle season.
