The sweeping Bordelaise staircase just inside Hôtel Continental leads you to expect similar grandeur throughout, but while rooms at this friendly 50-room place are modern and spacious, they don't match the lavishness of the formal reception area.
The furniture here (which is either blond-wood or painted in lurid shades like tangerine) and the woven bamboo wallpaper isn't going to win any design awards, but the rooms are well maintained. Pristine all-white bathrooms have heated towel rails, which are a definite coup in the colder months. Ask for a room with double French doors opening onto a classical wrought-iron balcony. Corridors are airy and well-lit (as is the breakfast area, which is crowned by a skylight). Hôtel Continental is a worthy midrange option for its swag of amenities including telephones, air-conditioning and TVs in all rooms, combined with its peaceful location on a semi-pedestrianised street close to stacks of shops.
