Lonely Planet review

Try for one of the large, wood-beamed rooms in the old building (a former sea captain's house), which add a smidgen of charm to this otherwise somewhat soulless chain establishment. English-speaking staff are super helpful, and there's a good buffet breakfast for only €5. There are also 13 prized covered parking spaces (€8).

Rooms in the old building have lovely beam ceilings, adding character to the otherwise functional combination of a single metal upper bunk above a double bed (though the bunks here are high, so you're unlikely to hit your head). Twelve of the north-facing upper level rooms in the new building have views over the rooftops and slivers of the yacht-filled port. There are wall-mounted TVs but no in-room phones (wi-fi's available though). You can get a continental breakfast or line up with the locals at the corner boulangerie (closed Tuesday) for your baguette. Covered parking's available on-site. English-speaking staff at the 24-hour reception desk (the only Etap in Marseille that is) are friendly and accommodating, though the 'do not disturb' signs don't always register with staff servicing your room (hey, but at least it's kept spotlessly clean).
