Place du Forum

Lonely Planet review

Just as social, political and religious life revolved around the forum in Roman Arles (spot the remains of a 2nd century AD temple embedded in Hôtel Pinus Nord’s facade), so this busy plane-tree-shaded square buzzes with cafe life today.

Beneath your feet are Cryptoportiques , subterranean foundations for the forum and buried arcades (the plaza was lower in Roman times) carved out in the 1st century BC. Access the underground galleries, 89m long and 59m wide, at the Hôtel de Ville .
