Lonely Planet review

The artefacts on display in this important museum, subtitled Musée de l'Histoire de Paris (Paris History Museum), chart the history of Paris from the Gallo-Roman period to the 20th century. Some of the nation's most important documents, paintings and other relics from the French Revolution are here.

It is housed in two hôtels particuliers (private mansions): the mid-16th-century Renaissance-style Hôtel Carnavalet, home to the 17th-century writer Madame de Sévigné from 1677 to 1696, and the Hôtel Le Peletier de St-Fargeau, which dates from the late 17th century.

Its non-Revolutionary attractions include Fouquet's stunning Art Nouveau jewellery shop from the rue Royale and Marcel Proust's cork-lined bedroom from his apartment on blvd Haussmann, where he wrote most of his 7350-page opus À la Recherche du Temps Perdu .
