    Grand Appétit

Set back from Bastille in a small, quiet street, this place offers light fare such as miso soup and cereals plus strength-building bols garnis (bowls of rice and mixed vegetables) and assiettes (platters) for those with a grand appétit (big appetite). The menu features delicious, filling dishes served with 100% organic cereals, raw and cooked vegetables and seaweed.

    Le Puits de Légumes

Homemade tarts, quiches and rice dishes smacking of fresh seasonal vegetables are the draw of the ‘Vegetable Well’, a sweet vegetarian address much loved by students in the Latin Quarter. From the tiny kitchen out back a comforting waft of homemade cooking pervades the simple dining room, filled with a handful of condiment-clad tables. Specials are chalked on the board outside. Before leaving, dedicated vegetarians can buy a copy of Organic & Vegetarian Paris (www.vegeparis.com), an English-language guide listing other veggie restaurants, juice bars, organic food shops and so on in the city.

    Bob’s Juice Bar

In need of some vitamin C? Sweet potato soup? This tiny outpost (and do note that it is tiny) with bags of rice flour and flax seed lining the walls serves delicious smoothies, freshly squeezed organic juices, vegan breakfasts, hummus sandwiches…in short, all those things you might have trouble finding elsewhere in Paris. There’s another branch ([tel] 09 52 55 11 66; 74 rue des Gravilliers, 3e; [hrs] 8am-3pm Mon-Fri, 10am-4pm Sat & Sun; [metro] Arts et Metiers) that also serves up a popular brunch at weekends.

    Le Potager du Marais

A very welcome addition to the Marais dining scene is this organic vegetarian restaurant within easy reach of the Centre Pompidou. The décor is rustic, with lots of lush plants inside, and there’s a full page of options for vegans. We especially enjoyed the onion soup. The ‘Marais Vegetable Garden’ is not cheap, but it makes for a refreshing change from the usual run-of-the-mill veggie eateries that feel more like canteens or at best cafeterias.

    Soya Cantine Bio

Housed in a former atelier (workshop) in what was until recently a very working-class district, Soya is a full-on vegetarian eatery serving dishes (many based around tofu and its variations) that are 95% organic. The décor is a bit brutal with its bare cement and metal columns but we love the glass floor that floods the basement area with light. Brunch (€22.50) is available till 3.30pm at the weekend.

    La Victoire Suprême du Cœur

This Indian-inspired vegan restaurant is a welcome addition to the hubbub of the Marais. Food is actually quite good; avoid the mock-meat dishes like the devilish-sounding seitan (wheat gluten) ‘steak’ and go for a thalli, a sampling tray of Indian goodies for €15. For drinks try the mango lassi or spiced tea. Weekend brunch is €21. No meat, no alcohol, no guilt.

    Godjo

Although its name means 'humble farmer's house', the woven wall-hangings, carved timber artefacts and paintings at this Ethiopian restaurant make eating here something like dining in an art gallery (but a buzzy, informal one). It's a great option for vegetarians, with a slew of meatless dishes to choose from.

    Joy in Food

This cosy little place just northwest of the place de Clichy serves homemade vegetarian dishes including omelettes and savoury tarte. The plat du jour might be couscous or vegetarian gratin and the huge desserts (apple crumble, chocolate cake) are legendary.

    Au Grain de Folie

This hole-in-the-wall macrobiotic and organic eatery run by a woman from Cambridge and in business for over 25 years has excellent vegetarian pâté and vegan quiche. There are also lots of good dippy things like hummus and guacamole.
