Berthillon is to ice cream what Château Lafite Rothschild is to wine. While the fruit flavours (eg cassis) produced by this celebrated glacier (ice-cream maker) are justifiably renowned, the chocolate, coffee, marrons glacés (candied chestnuts), Agenaise (Armagnac and prunes), noisette (hazelnut) and nougat au miel (honey nougat) are even richer. Choose from among 70 flavours.

    Simply the best!

    I was told by the locals that Berthillon ice creams taste like children's laughter. To be honest I didn't know what it meant until I tried the ice cream. I still can vividly remember what it tasted like. It's just amazing. So far I have not found better ice cream than Berthillon's.

    If you are a dark chocolate person you must try the bitter cocoa ice cream! Simply the best.

    You haven't tasted ice cream...

    ...until you've tasted Berthillon. Why go with the tired trinity of chocolate, strawberry and vanilla (though here, all are superb) when you can indulge in caramel ginger or praline with lemon and coriander? Or for something lighter, try the flavour explosions of, say, raspberry-rose or blood orange sorbet. You'd swear you were eating the very essence of the fruit, so fresh and clear are the flavours. No artificial ingredient or filler is used and the proof is, literally, in the pudding. Not that you should restrict Bethillon to dessert; it's good anytime of day, several times a day. The only negative is it's not open 365 days a year; in addition to closing on Mondays and Tuesdays, its doors are cruelly locked for much of August. Various outlets throughout the city sell a selection and are an option then or if the sometimes staggering queue between you and your double scoop of whiskey coffee seems unbearable.
