Lonely Planet review for Chartier
Chartier started life as a bouillon (soup kitchen) in 1896 and is a real gem because of its justifiably famous, 330-seat belle époque dining room. It’s no longer the deal as it once was, but for a taste of old-fashioned Paris, it’s unbeatable. Reservations are not accepted and some customers have been turned away at the last minute on busy nights – if there’s a long queue, head elsewhere.

Everything we were looking for. Thank you Lonely Planet!
cav82 recommends this,
My husband found this restaurant mentioned in the Lonely Planets guide to Paris as I had been nagging him that I would like a 'typicallly french' meal out on our day trip to Paris. We were a little cautious about where we ate as it is the Capital and the prices are generally very high. I am a big fan of bouillabaisse and it happened to mention that this restaurant used to be famous for this. We decided to give it a chance. It is a fair walk out from the centre we turned left at the Lourve and kept walking for what seemed like a lifetime and just as we were about to give up we found it. It probably wasnt as far as it felt but we visited Paris during a heatwave so it was hotter than we expected. We arrived at a very small passage to a quaint old fashioned turnstile door and greeted by very smart and friendly staff. The restaurant is really pretty and on two levels with lots of mirrors so looks like a Tardis. There is a menu with something for everyone on. . It is a very fast service but you do not feel rushed to leave. The prices are very reasonable for Paris. My husband and I had 3 courses each including fois gras, escargot, swordfish and beautifully cooked steak followed by a french pudding and cheese board. One bottle of Red wine, 2 beers a large bottle of water. The bill only came to 60 euros! and the food was delicious by far the nicest meal we had during our stay in France and a great atmosphere. The table cloths were made of a cafe style paper type material that the waiter used to write our orders on but it all added to the quirkyness. I will definitelty be returning next time we are in Paris. To put the 60 euros in perspective on our return to the coach we stopped for 2 beers along the Champs-Elysees and the bill was 26 euros. It is not the place if you are looking for modern style french food. The only downside was there was no Bouillabaise on the menu!
