Cave La Bourgogne
A prime spot for lapping up rue Mouffetard’s contagious ‘saunter-all-day’ spirit, this neighbourhood hang-out sits on square St-Médard, one of the Latin Quarter’s loveliest squares: flower-bedecked fountain, centuries-old church and market stalls spilling across one side. Inside, old ladies and their pet dogs meet for coffee around dark wood tables alongside a local wine-sipping set. In summer everything spills outside.

Félicie
Be it breakfast, lunch, pre- or post-dinner drinks, this unpretentious neighbourhood brasserie-bar with a big heated pavement terrace is a quintessentially Parisian spot to Zen any time of day. Throw in Sunday brunch, ‘express’ lunch deals built around bistro classics like steak tartare and a laid-back late-night vibe, and chances are you’ll be back.

Le Petit Fer à Cheval
A Marais institution, The Little Horseshoe is a pocket-sized cafe-bar with an original horseshoe-shaped zinc bar from 1903 leaving little room for much else. But nobody seems to mind at this genial place, overflowing with regulars from dawn to dark. Great apéro spot and great WC – stainless-steel toilets stall straight out of a Flash Gordon film (inspired, in fact, by the interior of the Nautilus submarine in Jules Verne’s 20,000 Leagues under the Sea).

L’Étoile Manquante
A fabulous pavement terrace, this time spilling out onto rue Ste-Croix de la Bretonnerie, The Missing Star is a trendy, gay-friendly bar with a retro interior topped by star-lit vaults. But it’s the TV cameras in the loos and the electric toy train that chugs between the girls’ and the boys’ that create the real buzz.
