A
Musée Malraux
At the city centre's southwestern tip, this fantastic modern space houses a truly fabulous collection of Impressionist works – the finest in France outside of Paris – by luminaries such as Degas, Monet, Pissarro, Renoir, Sisley and Le Havre native Eugène Boudin. A section is devoted to Fauvist Raoul Dufy, also born in Le Havre. The temporary exhibits here are often of very high quality too.

Les Docks Vauban
Le Havre's avant-garde architectural ambitions continue to shape the city, as this formerly run-down docklands area on the far side of Bassin Vauban proves. A cutting-edge magnet for shopping, eating and the arts, designed by Jean Nouvel, it's well worth checking out. As well as lots of big-brand shopping, there's also a large number of restaurants and a multiplex cinema.

Le Volcan
Although it's been compared to a truncated cooling tower or, even worse, a toilet bowl, Le Havre's most famous landmark is also its premier cultural venue and boasts concert halls and an excellent art cinema, L'Eden. One look and you'll understand how it got its name. It was conceived by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, who also designed the Brazilian capital.

Volcano
Look out for the Volcano, a curving whitewashed structure at the southern end of the Bassin du Commerce that has rather unflatteringly been compared to a truncated cooling tower or, even worse, a toilet bowl. It was designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, after whom the surrounding square is named.

Furnished in impeccable 1950s style, this perfectly preserved apartment within an ensemble of six striking Perret-designed residential buildings facing the town hall can be visited on a one-hour guided tour that starts at 1 place de l'Hôtel de Ville (in front of the Caron shoe shop).

Le Bistrot des Halles
This is something of a rarity in ultramodern Le Havre - a traditional bistro serving traditional food in a traditional atmosphere, with not a speck of concrete, steel or glass in sight. Expect brasserie standards (mainly steaks and seafood) and a cosy, classically French atmosphere.

La Marine Marchande
A great place to fill yourself up at knock-down prices before catching that afternoon ferry. The buffet table is packed with a selection of regional hors d'oeuvres, plus a main course, cheese, dessert and wine, all for just around €10.

One of the top restaurants in town for fish and seafood, much-loved by food critics and local gourmands. The menu changes according to the daily catch, but the generous assiettes de mer (seafood platter) is always a popular choice.

Jardins Suspendus
An old hilltop fortress a bit over 1km north of the tourist office has been transformed into a beautiful set of gardens, whose hothouses (adult/under 12yr €1/free) and outdoor spaces feature rare plants and cacti from five continents.

Église St-Joseph
The city is dominated by Perret's centrepiece, the magnificent 107m-high Église St-Joseph, which was begun in 1951 and inaugurated in 1959. Its 13,000 panels of coloured glass make the interior particularly striking when it's sunny.
