High Club/Studio 47
The High Club’s mega sound system draws the occasional big-name DJ and throngs of 20-somethings every weekend. Over-30s hang out in the adjoining Studio 47, a secondary bar in the room behind the vast dance floor. Doormen are fussy; look sharp or don’t get in. Every second Sunday is gay night.

L'Odace
Odace has inhabited the rather large shoes left by Le Grand Escurial, a dance venue that claimed to be the largest on the French Riviera. Reminiscent of Paris's Buddha Bar, you can kick back for lazy cocktails and nibbles in mock-Asian surrounds while laid-back tunes filter through the air.

Le Bar des Oiseaux
Artists dig this bohemian bar (and adjoining theatre) for live jazz, chanson française (French songs) and cabaret nights. Cover costs around €5 when there’s entertainment; you can also dine here (menus around €20; lunch Monday to Saturday, dinner Tuesday to Saturday).

Le Smarties
We love Smarties’ sexy ’70s swirly orange style, which draws a hot-looking straight-gay crowd. On weekends the tiny dance floor fills when DJs spin deep house, electro, techno and occasionally disco; weekdays are mellower. Free tapas with happy hour (nightly 6pm to 9pm).

Le Flag
It might be gay (with fabulously gay, as in colourful, interior to boot and a house cocktail called Rainbow), but this modern art gallery and lounge bar has its finger bang on the pulse for pleasing punters of all shapes and sexual orientations.

Villa 14
Dining is almost a passing thought at Villa 14, a contemporary eating space off place Masséna best known for its super-large, great-at-any-time-of-day terrace beneath turquoise awning. Lounge DJs kick in weekends and summer evenings.

Blue Moon
R & B, rap and House are among the mixed sounds to throb out of this port-side club. Friday is usually themed and Thursday yields various alcohol deals - like as much as Sex on the Beach a girl can drink until 03:00.

Le Liqwid
An exclusive bar-cum-club with food to boot (lunch served noon to 14:00), Liqwid cooks fusion cuisine in a steely Art Deco interior which, come late, stages some of Nice's best visiting DJs. Tough door policy.

Bliss Bar
Trendy Bliss is a favourite of happening 20-somethings. If you can’t decide whether to wait, peer inside the windows to get a taste of who’s inside. You’ll know right away if it’s a yes or no.

Grand Hotel Aston
If you're above the sort of shenanigans you'll find in the backpacker bars of Nice, head for the rarefied rooftop bar at the Grand Hotel Aston which has champagne views over Nice and the Med.

La Casa del Sol
Former bar-turned-restaurant, new look Casa del Sol is still a busy drinking spot come 23:00 when affluent 30-somethings hang out on sofa seating over cocktails and a dancey DJ mix.

Whether you’re after an espresso on your way to the cours Saleya market, or an aperitif (complete with cheese and charcuterie platters, €5.20) before trying out one of Nice’s fabulous restaurants, Les Distilleries is one of the most atmospheric bars in town. Tables on the small street terrace are ideal for watching the world go by.

Le Before
It's all very hip and trendy at Le Before, chiefly an aperitif bar where a chic crowd gather for an apéro dînatoire(aperitif with food) and background DJ mix.

Le Six
Primped and pretty A-gays crowd shoulder to shoulder at Nice’s compact, perennially popular ’mo bar. The thing to do: climb the ladder to the mezzanine (watch your head!).

An eating joint too, this sultry lounge bar with food touts a busy street terrace and minimalist interior topped with a glass chandelier. The food is Lebanese.

Slurp designer bottles of water from around the globe (fancy a Chinese lychee-flavoured water?) to the sound of lounge and electro. Décor is exotic.

A tad less rowdy than some of its backpacker counterparts, is the beer-tastic De Klomp with its 18 draught and 50 bottled beers.

La Civette du Cours
Sprawling across cours Saleya, La Civette is the place to hang out if you’re cool, regardless of age. Dark shades nurse a hangover with a cappuccino in the morning sun, locals kick back with a pre-lunch pastis at weekends and friends come here in the evenings for a kir or a beer.
