Lonely Planet review
Forget the Ritzes, Plazas and Metropoles of this world - if there was a catwalk contest between the globe's glitziest hotels, Monaco's historic Hôtel de Paris would surely take the jewel-encrusted tiara.
Princesses, presidents and pop idols alike all make a beeline for the Hôtel de Paris when in Monaco, so you'll certainly be in good company if you can afford the astronomical price-tag. Constructed in 1864 in glittering Belle Époque style, it's quite simply one of the most famous (and luxurious) hotels in Europe. The line-up of Bentleys, Lamborghinis and Maseratis parked outside is impressive enough, but it's inside the palatial lobby where you realise just how exclusive this place really is, with its dazzling display of sparkling chandeliers, marbled pillars, soaring ceilings and snappily-dressed concierges. As you'd expect, the heritage-themed bedrooms are spectacularly plush (sea-view balconies, regal beds, marble-clad bathrooms) although they vary in quality. The hotel boasts a range of boutiques, jewellers and a clutch of silver-service restaurants (arguably the best in Monaco).
