History
From 1278 to 1344 Perpignan was the capital of the kingdom of Mallorca, which stretched northwards as far as Montpellier and included the Balearic Islands. The town later became an important commercial centre and remains the third-largest Catalan city after Barcelona and Lleida (Lérida) in Spain.
