    L'Élysée-Montmartre

    A huge old music hall with a great sound system, L’Élysée-Montmartre is one of the better venues in Paris for one-off hip-hop and indie concerts (ex-Wu Tang Clan, Hush Puppies, Morgan Heritage, Sabotage). It opens for concerts at 6.30pm and hosts club events and big-name DJs at 11.30pm on Fridays and Saturdays.

    Dining is almost a passing thought at Villa 14, a contemporary eating space off place Masséna best known for its super-large, great-at-any-time-of-day terrace beneath turquoise awning. Lounge DJs kick in weekends and summer evenings.

    In a small turquoise-coloured space with a quirky collection of stainless steel and brass clocks (none of which show the same time), Spoutnik has regular live independent rock as well as 40 different flavours of vodka and good tap beer.

    Catch regular live bands at the rock school, which has a regular stream of up-coming French and international indie bands playing as well as various exhibitions. It's almost next door to the Auberge de Jeunesse.

    Also incorporating a snazzy restaurant wrapped around an 18th-century courtyard, sink back on raised Moroccan-style beds beneath the arches of this former convent cloister. Cutting-edge DJs mix it up on weekends.
