    Woolloomooloo

Inspired by the Australian bush, this eclectic Avignon institution, in a former printing house adjoining an old paper mill, embraces timber, antiques and a down-to-earth, authentic air that extends to its vegetarian-leaning menu. Get into to the spirit with a glass of the house speciality, Ti-Punch, packing Caribbean rum, lime juice, candied fruits, and spice-infused syrup.

    Club 555

The '70s meet techno at this discotheque, which has space for 700 revellers (mainly locals in their twenties), a polychromatic bar, plenty of banquettes for hanging out and an isolated corner for nonsmokers. The music is mixed; there's a theme party every Friday.

    Le Jekyll

Fill up on BBQ ribs, Irish lamb and Guinness stew washed down with a pint of Murphy's at Chamonix's Irish pub - or descend to the cellar for a shot with Hyde. Happy hour is 20:00 to 22:00, DJs and live bands play 'til late and Sunday breakfast/roast is a hit.

    El Ché Guevara

Don't ask us how the Cuba-Caen connection started, but you'll find this is just one of many Havana-themed nightspots round town. So dig out those Cuban heels (what do mean you didn't pack them?), order a margarita and break out those bossa nova moves, baby.

    Blue Moon

R & B, rap and House are among the mixed sounds to throb out of this port-side club. Friday is usually themed and Thursday yields various alcohol deals - like as much as Sex on the Beach a girl can drink until 03:00.

If you haven't managed to bag tickets to watch the city's football team play, this is the place to come and watch the game (unless you want to support the rival team, in which case you should leave Marseille).

Once you've had enough of the Cuban tip, head over for a pint of the black stuff and a whiskey chaser at this authentically Irish bar, complete with upside-down barrel-tables on the outside terrace.

    Le Tiffany

The gyrating bodies at sleek, modern Le Tiffany would have knocked the socks off the medieval people who built the vaulted cellar it has occupied since 1972. Friday and Saturday are theme nights.
