Bar, Cafe entertainment in France

  1. A

    L’Atmosphère

A nod to the 1938 flick Hôtel du Nord, this timber-and-tile cafe along the canal has an arty, spirited ambience, well-priced drinks and good food.

  2. B

    La Fourmi

A Pigalle institution, La Fourmi hits the mark with its high ceilings, long zinc bar and unpretentious vibe. Get up to speed on live music and club nights or sit down for a reasonably priced meal and drinks.

    Au Rendez-Vous des Amis

If you need to ease your way up or down the steps of Montmartre, look no further than this kick-back cafe-bar, which serves inexpensive espresso and pitchers of beer. Sandwiches and snacks are prepared in Hell’s Kitchen.

    Little Café

What you see is what you get at this unpretentious yet fashionable corner cafe where street-smart locals linger between boutiques to chat ‘n relax over great coffee, good wine and tasty food. Sunday brunch (€21) packs out the place, both inside and outside on the pavement. Electronic music predominates after dark.

    Au P'tit Douai

This colourful neighbourhood cafe is just down the street from the Moulin Rouge, but it might as well be light years away. Trade in the mayhem for some tranquillity over coffee, wines by the glass or traditional French fare at mealtimes.

    Café Chéri(e)

An imaginative, colourful bar with its signature red lighting, infamous mojitos and caiparinhas and commitment to quality tunes, Chéri(e) is everyone’s darling in this part of town. Gritty art-chic crowd and electro DJs Thursday to Saturday.

    Chez Prune

This Soho-boho cafe put Canal St-Martin on the map a decade ago and its good vibes and rough-around-the-edges look show no sign of fading in the near future.

    Café Baroc

The old cinema seats here are ideal for sipping flavoured beer (a big deal here). Normally a chilled, almost classy little place, things get hyper when bar staff play fabulously camp 1980s tunes.

    Le Pick-Clops

This buzzy bar-cafe – all shades of yellow and lit by neon – has Formica tables, ancient bar stools and plenty of mirrors. Attracting a friendly flow of locals and passers-by, it’s a great place for morning or afternoon coffee, or that last drink alone or with friends. Great rum punch served with copious amounts of peanuts.

    Le Sancerre

Le Sancerre is a popular, rather brash bistro-cum-bar that’s often crowded to capacity in the evening, especially on Saturdays. Scruffy yet attractive with its classic bistro decor and hip local mood, it has a prized terrace that gets the late morning sun.

    Café Charbon

With its post-industrial belle époque ambience, the Charbon was the first of the hip cafes and bars to catch on in Ménilmontant. It’s always crowded and worth heading to for the distressed decor with high ceilings, chandeliers and perched DJ booth. Food (mains €12.50 to €15) and evening tapas (€6) are both good.

    DeLaVille Café

This grand erstwhile brothel has an alluring mix of restored history and industrial chic. Between the high-ceilinged restaurant, one of the best terraces on the grands boulevards and the bar-lounge areas, you’re sure to find your niche somewhere.
