Introducing Fréjus & St-Raphaël

The twin towns of Fréjus (population 50, 536) and St-Raphaël (population 32, 000) bear the hallmarks of the area’s history over the millennia.

The site of some exceptional Roman ruins, France’s ‘little Pompeii’, Fréjus, was settled by Massiliots (the Greeks who founded Marseille) and colonised by Julius Caesar around 49 BC as Forum Julii. Its commercial activity largely ceased after its harbour silted up in the 16th century; and its ruins are scattered in and around the lively pedestrianised town centre, with pastel-shaded Provençal buildings and leafy piazzas.

St-Raphaël sits on a pretty harbourfront at the foot of the Massif de l’Estérel, and is blessed with a bounty of beaches. It became a fashionable hangout in the 1920s, when F Scott Fitzgerald wrote Tender is the Night here. Two decades on, St-Raphaël was one of the main landing bases of US and French troops in August 1944.
