    Le Pastis

Le Pastis is the perfect start to a night on the town. It's one of the new kids on the Cannes block, but you would think it had been here forever. Charismatic barman Manuel mixes show-stopping cocktails, and there's a great wine list as well as a blackboard menu.

    Le Flag

It might be gay (with fabulously gay, as in colourful, interior to boot and a house cocktail called Rainbow), but this modern art gallery and lounge bar has its finger bang on the pulse for pleasing punters of all shapes and sexual orientations.

    La Terrasse

The Terrace, atop the casino, is Menton's only really serious drinking space with sea view. Ambiance lounge face à la mer (lounge bar atmosphere facing the sea) is its marketing line. Saturday is disco night.

    Carignan

Taste wine safe in the knowledge that Léandre Piquet (a former sommelier at the Majestic) is an authority. Find him behind the bar in his pocket-sized bar à vins (wine bar) atop the hill in Le Suquet.

    Grand Hotel Aston

If you're above the sort of shenanigans you'll find in the backpacker bars of Nice, head for the rarefied rooftop bar at the Grand Hotel Aston which has champagne views over Nice and the Med.

    La Casa del Sol

Former bar-turned-restaurant, new look Casa del Sol is still a busy drinking spot come 23:00 when affluent 30-somethings hang out on sofa seating over cocktails and a dancey DJ mix.

    Le Before

It's all very hip and trendy at Le Before, chiefly an aperitif bar where a chic crowd gather for an apéro dînatoire(aperitif with food) and background DJ mix.

    L'ybane

An eating joint too, this sultry lounge bar with food touts a busy street terrace and minimalist interior topped with a glass chandelier. The food is Lebanese.

    Le Water Bar

Slurp designer bottles of water from around the globe (fancy a Chinese lychee-flavoured water?) to the sound of lounge and electro. Décor is exotic.

    De Klomp

A tad less rowdy than some of its backpacker counterparts, is the beer-tastic De Klomp with its 18 draught and 50 bottled beers.

This once-trendy bar now looks a touch dated, but the garden remains a fun spot for a drink; DJs spin monthly.

  17. La Voile Rouge

Parts of And God Created Woman were filmed here followed by the first sightings of topless bathers and later the g-string bikini. The beach club remains hot stuff come dusk today - champagne à gogo, cocktails, dancing on tables and DJ mixes (buy the CD). Find it at the northern end of Pampelonne on Mooréa Plage. No credit cards.
