    Au Grandval

Opened in 1892, since when little has changed in Monsieur Fleschi's bar except for the addition of a formica counter 30 years ago. Archive photographs of Ajaccio streets cover the walls and outside you can sit by the palm tree, planted by the owner's grandfather on the 100th anniversary of Napoléon's death and listen to the chatter of the resident parakeet.

    Chez Tao

Within the citadel, Chez Tao is an institution. This super-smooth piano bar occupying a lavishly decorated vaulted room was founded in 1935 by Tao Kanbey de Kerekoff, a White Russian émigré, and it still attracts hedonistic hipsters seven decades later.

    Casino Municipal

The plush Casino Municipal is fine for a flutter. The more serious gaming room, with roulette and blackjack, opens at 21:30. Visitors are expected to dress 'appropriately' and the two heavies at the door will eye you for appropriacy.

Le Son des Guitares puts on local guitar soloists and ensembles. Admission is free and drinks ('renouvables tous les 45 minutes' - fresh purchase required every 45 minutes - says the churlish sign) cost around €5.

About 2.7km from town heading towards Île Rousse and just before the airport turnoff, La Camargue has a pool, piano-bar and open-air dance floor. In high summer there's a free shuttle bus from town.

    Bar 1er Consul

This bar is a good spot for a morning coffee on the terrace overlooking busy place Foch. Inside, brown leather banquettes, smoke-stained walls and giant mirrors add to the period atmosphere.

La Place, beside the casino and the only disco in Ajaccio proper, is an older person's pick-up joint where the music's mainly techno. Expect to pay in excess of around €7 for drinks.
