Lonely Planet review

Overlooking leafy Basses Promenades to the north, this landmark hotel with 50 rooms spread over three floors offers outstanding value for its location. What's more, it dates back to 1862 so there's a slight whiff of the 'old world' throughout.

This tradition is immediately apparent in the crowded lobby, with its gilt-framed oils, Oriental carpets, ancient upright piano and glass and brass lantern overhead. The guestrooms have been visited by the renovation fairy once or twice over the past decades but retain some of their old style, with antique armoires and coronet-draped beds. If size matters, choose blue room No 109, with its (most likely faux) chinoiserie cabinet. Smaller but full of light owing to its two windows (including one in the bathroom) is corner room No 107. The rather dark and maze-like corridors are enlivened by some not-insignificant artwork.
