Perched on a Vieux Lyon hill well away from the tourist hubbub, this lavishly decorated villa is a refined choice. Think background classical music, a stash of fine art and antiques, period furnishings and potted silk plants.
Part of the exclusive Relais & Chateaux hotel group, every last detail here wolf-whistles luxury - granite reception, heavy tapestry wall hangings, chandeliers and pricey Dior handbags displayed behind glass. Rooms are predictably spacious and wrap privileged guests in cotton-wool. Suites in particular are vast: plump for a corner suite facing the pool or a split-level mezzanine suite topped with an extraordinary plafonds à la française (a beamed ceiling of gigantic proportion, typical of 18th-century Lyonnais architecture). Should you need electric curtains and three TV sets, go for the Suite Médicis - but be prepared for the long walk from reception. Our favourite spots: the reception which was an 18th-century chapel; and the outdoor swimming pool with city view.
