This is the perfect place to unwind after a long day testifying before an EU Parliament subcommittee - or chasing swans along the banks of the Ill. Le Regent has the feel of a haut-bourgeois home of the mid-1800s.
A reception counter made of dark green marble greets you as you walk into this four-star, 47-room establishment. Reached by a grand staircase (there's also a lift) with a wrought-iron railing, the rooms have high ceilings (bits of the old moulding peek through here and there), bathtubs, oil paintings and double doors to ensure privacy. Down pillows are available on request. Some rooms look out on the river, while others have views of the courtyard. The breakfast room is a gem thanks to its early-19th-century ceiling, squeaky parquet floor, flowery draperies and serviettes neatly folded like a peacock on each plate; views are of the River Ill and the two heavy, Germanic spires of Église St-Paul.
