Sparkling and well-looked-after, this family-owned, three-star hotel is popular with members of the EU Parliament - and for good reason: the rooms are quiet and comfortable, the staff are highly professional and it's only two blocks from the train station. Management makes real efforts to implement ecologically sustainable best practices.

The public areas are all you could ask for from a mid-sized hotel. In the bar area, the rounded, red marble counter is accented by sunken LED runway lights and surrounded by plush chairs and cushy banquettes. A second lounge, silent except for the ticking of the grandfather clock, feels like a giant living room, with dark wood-panelled walls, orange-yellow couches, translucent yellow curtains and a recessed area for the sultan and his harem. The breakfast room, on the other hand, feels rustically Alsatian thanks to its thatch ceiling and collection of copper pitchers, pewter mugs and old ceramics. If you can't fall asleep, think of a slowly ticking metronome and say 'Monopole Métropole metronome' over and over again.
