  2. Café Jehanne d'Arc

This bar bears its long history - the roof beams are from the 1500s, the faint frescoes two or three centuries older - with good humour and mellowness. The sound track ranges from Dizzie Gillespie to Brel to Gainsbourg. There's a refreshing terrace in the warm months.

  3. L'Appart

The house in which the poet Paul Verlaine - Arthur Rimbaud's lover and, almost, his assassin - was born in 1844 is now a laid-back mainly-gay bar with campy light fixtures, a retro 1950s ceiling, a bright-orange floor and centuries-old carved wood panelling that's protected by law. Drag queens do their thing at on Sunday.

  4. Le Tiffany

The gyrating bodies at Le Tiffany would have knocked the socks off the medieval people who built the vaulted cellar it has occupied since 1972. This classic discotheque was given a sleek modern look in 2005. Friday and Saturday are theme nights.
