Lonely Planet review for Panimoravintola Plevna

Inside the old Finlayson textile mill, this big barn of a place offers a wide range of delicious beer, cider and perry brewed on the premises, including an excellent strong stout. Meals are large and designed to soak it all up: massive sausage platters and enormous slabs of pork in classic beer-hall style as well as more Finnish fish and steak dishes. Vegetables here mean potatoes and onions, preferably fried, but it’s all tasty, and service is fast.

    Blood sausage and home-brewed beer!

    gregdonaghue recommends this,

Tampere, the “Manchester of Finland”, gets rather cold in the winter. Freezing winds, ice and snow mean that finding a good pub to settle into in this lakeside town is a must. Thankfully, Panimoravintola Plevna fits the bill. This surprisingly big pub/restaurant sits inside the enormous Finlayson factory conversion on one edge of the city. Tampere used to be an industrial textile town, but the Finlayson factory – one of the largest – is now home to a whole range of restaurants, cafes, movie theatres and one of the weirdest nightclubs you’ll ever see. Panimoravintola Plevna is one of the best places in Tampere to start a night, and definitely the place to go to try Mustamakkara – the local blood sausage. “Musta” is not for the feint-hearted, but its worth trying for those who delight in trying local delicacies! If you can’t stomach that you can try a whole range of Finnish and German-influenced foods and they brew their own beer, giving you plenty of new experiences to try. Their dark beers, pilsners and amber ale are all worth a try, and match the food selections really well. Overall, Panimoravintola Plevna is a lovely little find in a fun Finnish city.
