Things to do in Hamina

  1. Cruises

    Also from Tervasaari there are summer Cruises to the fishing village on the island of Tammio. Departures are five times a week; schedules vary significantly between mid-May and late August. You can also reach Ulko-Tammio, an island further south but within the boundaries of the national park, on weekends from mid-June to the end of July.

  2. Pursiravintola Vantti

    On a small island, this yacht club has the best views in town. Dishes use local salmon and seafood, but also include traditional Finnish meatballs. Larger groups can book out the sauna. A ferry collects you from Tervasaari harbour with the press of the buzzer.

  3. Town Hall

    Restored 19th-century wooden buildings grace the eight radial streets of Hamina's octagonal town plan. From its centre - Hamina has a more literal centre than most towns, dominated by the 18th-century Town Hall - most sights are a short walk away.

  4. Town Museum

    Housed in Hamina’s oldest building, the recently refurbished Town Museum is the museum of local history. King Gustav III of Sweden and Catherine II (the Great) of Russia held negotiations here in 1783.

    This excellent restaurant is located in the old customs house, which gives it an historic atmosphere. The menu embraces Finnish fish and game dishes with flair, though lunches can be crowded by tour groups.

    You’ll know this sweet coffee spot by the cups and saucers stacked in the window. It does coffee and home-baked buns and cakes, and for a quick lunch there are rolls and quiches, which are made fresh.

    In Old Hamina, in the historic Hotel Seurahuone, is a brooding basement pub once used by visiting seafarers. There's regular live music, karaoke and a summer terrace at the side of the hotel.

  8. Orthodox Church of Saints Peter & Paul

    A highlight of Old Hamina includes the 1837 Orthodox Church of Saints Peter & Paul, thought to have been created by architect Louis Visconti, who designed Napoleon's tomb in France.

    Northwest of Old Hamina are remnants of the 18th-century Hamina Fortress, including 3km of crumbling stone walls, and the star-shaped bastions, but there really isn't much left to see.
