Square, Plaza sights in Finland

  1. A

    Kauppatori

The Kauppatori is in the heart of Old Rauma. It's a typically lively market square teeming with food and craft stalls, buskers and tourists. On the south side is Rauma's most imposing building, the Vanha Raatihuone (old town hall), built in 1776. It now houses the Rauma Museum, with exhibits relating to seafaring and the city's lacemaking heritage, including model ships, paintings, baroque furniture and lace costumes.

    Senaatintori

From the market square walk up the cobbled Sofiankatu to Senaatintori, Helsinki's majestic central square. Surrounded by early 19th-century buildings, the square was modelled after St Petersburg's.

CL Engel's stately Tuomiokirkko, finished in 1852, is the Senate Square's most prominent feature and the steps are a favourite meeting place.

    Vanha Suurtori

Opposite Turku Cathedral, the Vanha Suurtori was once the main town square. It's surrounded by elegant buildings; the old town hall and trading mansions. A cobbled courtyard holds a book café; a peaceful spot on a sunny day.

  4. Narrow Streets

Don't expect another Porvoo, but the Narrow Streets around Degerby Gille restaurant are the quaintest in town, and the restaurant itself is in a building that predates the town (1662).
